This dataset is an output of KIP INCA. It describes the ecosystem service of crop pollination. In particular the data represent the actual use of pollination as an ecosystem service at municipality level.
The vectormap shows the sum at LAU level of tonne of crop production attributable to pollination (where pollinator potential indicator > 0.2) for 2000, 2006, and 2012). -999 Nodata.
LAU stands for Local Adminstrative Unit. The LAU2 level used in this map (formerly NUTS level 5) consists of municipalities or equivalent units in the 28 EU Member States.
Pollination is a key ecosystem service as many crops but in particular, fruits and vegetables are partially dependent on pollinating insects to produce food for human consumption.
The overlap between the pollination potential and demand for pollination is used to quantify the area generating the actual flow (or use) of the service : the use area. In this way, the use area is defined as the extent of pollinator-dependent crops benefiting from the service providing area with different pollination potentials.
The data express the amount (kg) of crop per pixel attributable to the role of pollinators.
The potential is based on the data for 2012 (INCA - Pollination - ES Potential -2012). The demand is based the data for 2008 (INCA - Pollination - ES Demand -2008).
