The survey explores Europeans’ familiarity with their status as EU citizens and their understanding of the rights conferred by EU citizenship; attitudes towards free movement in the EU and consular support while staying in a non-EU country; their knowledge and opinions on electoral rights; and their views on ways of increasing voter participation in European Parliament elections. A vast majority of Europeans (91%) are familiar with the term “citizen of the European Union”. 84% of respondents think that the free movement of EU citizens within the EU brings overall benefits to the economy of their country, which represents an increase by 13 percentage points since 2015.

The fieldwork took place between the 9th of July and the 26th of August 2020 in the EU27 Member States and between the 10th of July and the 10th of August 2020 in the other countries and territories. Exceptionally, this Standard Eurobarometer survey was conducted during summer (July-August) instead of spring because of the coronavirus pandemic and in some countries, alternative interview modes to face-to-face were necessary as a result of the situation. The survey includes topics such as the European political situation and the economic situation. It analyses how Europeans perceive their political institutions, both national governments and parliaments, the EU and its institutions as well as their main concerns. It also examines people's attitudes on European citizenship and on issues linked to key policy areas. It also includes questions on the Europeans perceptions of the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences.

The study was carried out between 7 June and 12 July 2006 among 24,796 people in the 25 European Union Member States as well as in the acceding countries (Bulgaria and Romania). In Turkey and Croatia, the study was carried out between 17 November and 19 December among 2,005 respondents that same year.
The study’s aims were in particular:
- to measure the level of awareness among European citizens of European collaborative research projects on biological and medical issues and their awareness of European Union co-funding. Furthermore the study sought to put this information in the more general context of citizens´ interest in science and technology and biological and medical research, also taking into account personal and socio-economic factors;
- to identify factors which raise awareness of European collaborative research projects on biological and medical issues and of European co-funding,
- to generally contribute to improving the strategy of promoting those research projects which are funded by the European Union. Furthermore, in the last part of this study we analyse three different groups of citizens:
- those aware of European biological and medical research projects and the fact that they are co-funded by the EU,
-those not aware of the projects but who are interested in the field of science and medical research,
- those not aware of the projects and who also have no interest in the field of science and medical research.

The main themes addressed in this survey are:
• The role of the EU in cross-border civil justice
• EU citizens’ experience of civil justice in other Member States and non EU countries
• EU citizens’ perceptions of difficulties in cross-border civil justice
• Awareness and experience of the EU’s cross-border legal procedures

This wave of the Eurobarometer was carried out between 11 September and 5 October 20091 in the 27 European Union Member States.
Somer key findings are:
• There is a remarkable degree of consensus (roughly 90% in each case) that the EU should do more to provide support for its member states in the various fields of disaster management. An overwhelming majority of European respondents surveyed (91%) believe that the EU should assist volunteer organisations in their respective countries.
• There is a variety of reasons for people supporting EU involvement in their country when it comes to disaster management policy. Solidarity between countries is the most important reason given, while the view that coordinated action is better than individual action is in second place. Other respondents feel that it is because their governments do not have sufficient resources to deal with disasters effectively.
• A vast majority of European residents (roughly 90% of respondents) surveyed felt that common measures (along similar lines to the Floods Directive already in force2) and standards (e.g. on the safety of buildings) should be adopted across Europe to deal with disasters.
• A large majority (again, roughly 90%) of respondents support assisting
neighbouring countries in Europe as well as countries elsewhere in the world that have been affected by disasters.
• While there are considerable variations by country, flooding and violent storms are the two risks most widely feared by EU27 citizens as a whole.

The results were more positive, with a high percentage of respondents feeling confident they would keep their jobs, and over half thinking the financial situation would be stable or improve in the next 12 months. Nevertheless, more than half felt poverty had increased at local, national and EU levels, and a fifth of those surveyed had difficulties keeping up with household bills. Regarding pensions, a large proportion thought they would have to save more, would receive lower pensions, or would have to retire later than planned.

This survey is the latest in a series that have been carried out since 2003. Although the questionnaire design has changed over time, the main objectives have remained unchanged: mapping the current consumption of tobacco products, understanding the motivations behind smoking and the attitudes underlying smoking behavior, and identifying measures to reduce the number of Europeans who smoke.
This year's special Eurobarometer looks at four major issues:
- Awareness of humanitarian aid: examining EU citizens' awareness of EU funding for humanitarian aid activities.
- Attitudes to humanitarian aid: looking at EU citizens' support for the European Union to fund humanitarian aid activities and support for continued funding in the current economic crisis. It also examines whether EU citizens believe it is more efficient if humanitarian aid is provided by each EU Member State separately, or if it is provided by the EU as a whole and coordinated by the European Commission.
- Knowledge and information on EU humanitarian activities: examining how well informed EU citizens are about the humanitarian aid activities of the EU and which information sources they prefer.
- Attitudes towards the EU voluntary aid corps that is currently being set up by the European Commission: exploring whether they support the idea of engaging young people in EU humanitarian activities.
