Enhanced effectiveness and safety of rescuers involved in high risk activities by designing innovative rescue equipment systems (INREQ)

Improving rescue team safety, work comfort and effectiveness was the INREQ project objective, realized by the Consortium consisting of KOMAG, CSRG, DMT, GAUK, AITEMIN, GEOCONTROL and ICOP. The project tasks were divided into three thematic groups. The first group focused on improving the method for tunnel clearance in the debris area to reach the trapped miners after an underground accident. Lightweight hydraulic legs with internal pump and canopies, lightweight chain conveyor with auxiliary shuttle platform and a lightweight air conditioner supplying cold air to the working area were developed. The prototypes of these devices were manufactured and tested. ATEX certification of the devices was then successfully carried out. The second group of tasks focused on measuring equipment for monitoring the underground climate and rescuers’ body parameters. GAUK’s existing m-Comm communication system was modified. An additional module for body monitoring and data transfer as well as electronic climate measuring device CMD were developed. The CMD device can be used separately or in cooperation with m-Comm system via Bluetooth. ATEX certification for the CMD device was also realized. The third group of tasks focused on two innovative concepts of technologies for tunnelling the rock mass. The first technology consists in using special equipment to detach pieces of rock one by one, through previously prepared boreholes. This technology was tested with some success. The second one, similar to uTBM technology, supported by high-pressure water streams, was successfully tested on the specially prepared test bench.
