Save the date and join the Data4Good Festival
From 10 to 12 May, the Data4Good festival invites charities, social enterprises, public sector bodies, funders, and support organisations to share their data stories. The flagship event presents social sector organisations that use data to deliver greater impact, and showcases how these organisations use data to design more effective and efficient products and services. At the event, charities including Citizens Advice, London’s Air Ambulance Charity, Sustrans, Teach First, Cause4, and the British Red Cross will share their data journeys. The European Commission proposes rules and actions for excellence and trust in AI
On 21 April, the European Commission put forward new rules and actions designed to support Europe in becoming a global centre for trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI). By combining the first-ever legal framework on AI with a Coordinated Plan with Member States, Europe aims to safeguard the safety and rights of citizens, businesses, and organisations, and increase the uptake of AI and inspire investment and innovation across the European Union. On Wednesday 7 April, Jasmin Kareem ( Statistics Netherlands) and Eva van Rooijen ( Knowledge Centre for Government Publications) joined the EDP and Support Centre for Data Sharing (SCDS) team for a discussion on Check-the-Facts Higher Education, a decision-making tool for students. Check-the-Facts Higher Education provides high school students with an intuitive platform to access information that can help them decide which future studies to pursue. City of Aix-en-Provence launches its open data portal
The City of Aix-en-Provence celebrates the recent launch of the city’s open data portal, created in collaboration with Opendatasoft. The portal provides access to 53 datasets, provided by the city’s municipality, the National Ministry of Education, and the National Institute of Statistics. European Data Portal continues as data.europa.eu
Soon the European Data Portal will merge with the European Open Data Portal to continue under a new name: data.europa.eu. Under this name, the project will continue on its mission to support European countries in publishing open data, increasing their open data maturity, and promoting awareness of open data’s potential for re-use. The goal of the data.europa.eu project is to improve accessibility and increase the value of public sector information along the whole data value chain. A non-EU perspective on EU regulatory activity
On Wednesday 31 March, the Support Centre for Data Sharing (SCDS) and European Data Portal (EDP) team were joined by Julia Reinhardt, an expert in technology governance and public policy consultation, to discuss EU regulatory activity from a non-EU perspective. Julia advises companies in the United States (US) on compliance with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and gives strategic advice on evolving technology policies world-wide as well as the complex “global privacy patchwork”. European Commission launches the European Innovation Council (EIC)
On 18 March 2021, the European Commission launched the European Innovation Council (EIC) as part of the Horizon Europe programme. With a budget of over €10 billion this council will support and further develop breakthrough innovations between 2021 and 2027. The EIC sponsors small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), start-ups, and spinout companies to grow and scale up through the EIC Accelerator, a team of EIC Programme Managers helps to transform these ideas into reality.
