Geospatial Open Data for Europe's environment

INSPIRE Conference 2016

From 26 to 30 September, Barcelona welcomes the annual INSPIRE conference. During this conference stakeholders from government, academia and industry gather to hear about and discuss the latest developments in the field of the INSPIRE Directive. This Directive, standing for 'Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Community', concerns the development of an EU infrastructure specifically for geospatial data. Using this overarching infrastructure, Europe's public sector organisations share their spatial information and provide better access to spatial information across Europe.

This year the conference will explore the role for geospatial data for the 7th Environment Action Programme which guides European environment policy until 2020. Over the past decade, a broad range of environmental legislation has been developed by the European Union to protect, preserve and improve Europe's environment for present and future generations. An important tool to implement this legislation is by sharing environmental data across Europe, which requires effective coordination between all concerned authorities and addresses both legal and technical interoperability. Requirements which are also pursued in the context of the Digital Single Market initiative and in programmes such as the Connecting Europe Facility, making the INSPIRE developments relevant for other sectors as well.
