Finnish Transport Agency releases train location data
Right on track? The Finnish Transport Agency Liikennevirasto has released information on train locations as Open Data. These datasets show, for example, when trains have arrived at a particular station and at which section of a track trains are currently located.
The Open Data from the Finnish Transport Agency is used to develop for instance train warning applications. These applications alert citizens about crossing trains. However, since the data is not yet fully real-time, the Finnish Transport Regulatory Agency points out that applications should not yet be used for warning about approaching trains. Liikennevirasto keeps working on these data shortages in order to improve the coverage and accuracy of the Open Data provided.
