How to make common European data spaces a reality

Emerging approaches for data-driven innovation in Europe

The digital transformation of the economy and society is high on the European Commission’s priorities list. To make it a reality, the European strategy for data focuses on creating common European data spaces for strategic sectors such as the environment, agriculture, industry, health, and transportation.

Data spaces are ecosystems that data providers, intermediaries, and users can access to share data. This ensures that more data becomes available in the economy and society but leaves the control in the hands of companies and individuals who generate the data.

Innovative approaches to data sharing such as these data spaces are key enablers for the digital transformation but what are the technologies and tools behind them? And which socio-technical factors and forces come into play with these technologies?

A recent publication by the Joint Research Centre looked into these questions and presents a wealth of experiments to answer these questions.

One of their key findings is that the open-source community plays an important role. The European technological landscape contains many SMEs and “a healthy open-source community of developers and early adopters. This can act as an enabler for the implementation of the European strategy for data.”

Researchers also mention the opportunities for using binary data formats, IoT data, and edge computing for example by using AI to analyse sensor data to increase the quality of life.
