Unlocking Europe’s data potential: The EU’s Data Union Strategy
for AI innovation
The European Union has been in active pursuit of increasing the
availability of data for the purpose of AI development, as well as
simplifying data rules. Artificial intelligence is a driving force in
the current economic and tech landscapes, as it develops new solutions
for various industries and markets. To help fuel AI with high-quality
data, the Data Union Strategy
[https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/data-union] aims to
unlock the full potential of data and complete the single market for
data.

With the launch of the Data Union Strategy, the EU is helping
businesses stay competitive in the economy, providing researchers with
data to train their AI, and helping consumers see more innovation and
enhanced services. The strategy has 3 main priority areas to enable
action: focusing on streamlining EU data rules, safeguarding EU data
sovereignty, and scaling up access to data needed for AI. For each of
these areas, a roadmap of actions has been implemented to help fast
track the strategy to success.

The European Data Portal is working on enabling users to get access to
data needed for AI development, as well as raising awareness on the
new strategy. Recently, the data.europa academy hosted the webinar
‘Building Europe’s data future: understanding the Data Union
Strategy’
[https://data.europa.eu/en/news-events/events/webinar-building-europes-data-future-understanding-data-union-strategy],
which highlighted the Data Union Strategy and gave users insights into
the European legislative landscape.

With this new strategy, the EU can work towards boosting the AI
innovation sphere and help create better access to high-quality
curated data across all industries.
