Open data as a public good: evidence-based development across
territories
Get ready for our upcoming Academy webinar, organised in the context
of the EU Open Data Day, taking place on FRIDAY, 13 MARCH 2026, FROM
10:00 TO 11:30 CET, titled ‘’Open data as a public good:
evidence-based development across territories’’
[https://dataeuropaacademy.clickmeeting.com/webinar-open-data-as-a-public-good-evidence-based-development-across-territories-/register],
the webinar will explore how open data can support better,
evidence-based decision-making. Register now to learn from concrete
examples and expert insights!

The webinar will focus on how public authorities can use open data to
better understand territorial accessibility, service provision, and
socio-economic challenges, particularly in rural areas. While
data-driven policymaking is becoming more common, data about rural
contexts is often less available or less visible. This session brings
together experts from civil society, academia, and public
administration to discuss how this gap can be addressed, drawing on
experiences from the UK and Ireland.

Solana Larsen from the Open Knowledge Foundation
[https://okfn.org/en/] will open the session by explaining open data
as a global public good and highlighting how Open Data Day encourages
transparency, accountability, and innovation worldwide. Johanna
Walker, researcher at King’s College London
[https://www.kcl.ac.uk/], will then examine how the prioritisation of
urban data influences the collection and use of data in rural
contexts. Finally, Patrick Collins will present the Irish social
gradient tool Pobal [https://www.pobal.ie/], showing how open data is
used to identify areas of deprivation and support informed decisions
on resource allocation. The webinar will end with an interactive Q&A
session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers.
