Urban Policy for Eurostat [https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat] and with the
support of the European Parliament
[https://www.europarl.europa.eu/portal/en] and the European Committee
of Regions [https://cor.europa.eu/en] launched the PILOT PROJECT
‘MONITORING THE SDGS IN THE EU REGIONS – FILLING THE DATA GAPS –
REGIONS2030

It was proposed by MEP Petros Kokkalis in 2021 and approved by the
European Commission in 2022. This project is a follow-up to
the latest report on the  implementation of the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development

in which the report incentivises the creation of indicators to design
a monitoring system for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at
their territorial level.

The aim of the project is to inspire EU regions to engage actively in
the localisation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and to
promote a culture of transparent, data-informed decisions and
policymaking. This project involving ten regions
[https://knowledge4policy.ec.europa.eu/news/regions2030-pilot-regions-announced_en],
has two main objectives:

 	* To engage EU regions in the monitoring SDGs processes – to
provide a monitoring framework for regional authorities in their
respective territories and to support statistical capacities in the
data collection, monitoring and evaluation.
 	* To increase local ownership of the SDGs, openness and transparency
in achieved results – to provide tailored trainings to regional
authorities for proper collection and analysis of data for ensuring
quality and availability of data.

This new pilot project is the first pan-European project to design an
SDG monitoring system at their territorial level and will be funded by
the European Parliament. The project is scheduled to conclude in
December 2023 with four expected outcomes that will serve as a
reference guide for the pilot participants and for regions across the
EU.
