Learn about the key highlights of the webinar ‘Data spaces:
Introducing the concept and relevance in today’s world’
On Friday 12 May, the data.europa academy
[https://data.europa.eu/en/academy] hosted the webinar ‘DATA SPACES:
INTRODUCING THE CONCEPT AND RELEVANCE IN TODAY’S WORLD’. This was
the first webinar in a series of webinars on Data Spaces, aligning
with the European Data Strategy
[https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/european-data-strategy_en],
where a common European data space
[https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/staff-working-document-data-spaces]
is defined as a key element to facilitate data pooling and sharing.
This first webinar introduced its concept, policy and legal framework.

Data spaces are data ecosystems that operate based on shared policies
and rules to overcome legal and technical barriers to data sharing and
unleash the value of data. Building upon this concept, a
cross-sectoral legislative framework has been established, including
  the Data Governance Act
[https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=celex%3A52020PC0767],
Data Act
[https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=COM%3A2022%3A68%3AFIN]
and Implementing Act on High-Value datasets
[https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=uriserv%3AOJ.L_.2023.019.01.0043.01.ENG].

Throughout this session, participants got an introduction to the
concept of data spaces and the policy and legal framework surrounding
them. Following that, the current state of play of Data spaces
[https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/staff-working-document-data-spaces]
was explained considering the different strategic fields, technical
aspects and the benefits and challenges of implementing them. The Q&A
session delved into interesting questions, such as the relationship
between the INSPIRE directive and data spaces. Furthermore, the
speakers discussed the expected role of citizens and regions which
will contribute to the development of data spaces. Finally, questions
regarding the IT-architecture and other technical features were
highlighted, with plans to explore these topics in a future session
within the 'Data Spaces' series.

for our second webinar in this series on data spaces, which will
highlight the similarities and differences between the strategic
fields.
