World Youth Skills Day: Open data to foster learning opportunities
Today we celebrate World Youth Skills Day
[https://www.un.org/en/observances/world-youth-skills-day] to
encourage young people all around the world to obtain skills for
personal success and make their dreams come true. This year highlights
the essential role of teachers, trainers and other educators in
providing skills for youth to transition to the labour market and
actively engage in today’s world.

The right skills bring several benefits, such as better job
opportunities and broader possibilities to fully engage in society.
This is why the European Commission has designated2023 as the European
Year of Skills
[https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/european-year-skills-2023_en].
It aims to address skills shortages in the EU, promote reskilling and
upskilling and help people acquire the right skills for quality jobs.

To develop the right skills, open data initiatives can support
teachers, trainers and educators as well as the people learning the
skills. For example, the TuvaLabs [https://tuvalabs.com/] platform
aims to enable all students to enjoy learning math and science through
the lens of the real world. The platform enables people to improve
their data analytical and data literacy skills by making it possible
to visually explore and analyse data in various forms, ask questions
about the data and use it for decision-making. Students can learn by
doing, exploring, manipulating and analysing data while using graphing
and statistical tools.

Let’s harness the potential of young people and support them in
acquiring the right skills to fully engage in society. Curious to know
