The European Drug Report 2023: Trends and Developments
The European Drug report 2023: Trends and Developments
[https://www.emcdda.europa.eu/publications/european-drug-report/2023_en#data-visualisations] is
the latest annual report on drug situation in Europe published by the
European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA)
[https://www.emcdda.europa.eu/index_en]. The report is centred on the
topics of illegal drug consumption, associated risks, and drug
distribution. Its objective is to provide a concise overview of the
current drug landscape in Europe, based on an extensive collection of
national data, encompassing developments and trends up to the end of
2022.

This year's report has been designed as a digital-first publication
for the first time. It is interactive and visually rich, with over 100
data visualisations, graphics and maps. Additionally, all of
the source data behind the visualisations was made available for
sharing and reuse

on the day of publication of the report.

It is particularly important as open data can provide a more
comprehensive understanding of the current drug situation in Europe in
relation to a number of aspects. Since 2011, the EMCDDA has been
conducting studies on wastewater analysis and drug trends across
Europe by combining open data

scientific studies into an interactive map

In the 2023 report, EMCDDA has also assessed the various drug

efforts

undertaken by European countries.

These initiatives align with a broader European trend of using open
data to improve public health
