Discover the highlights of our webinar ‘Sovereignty and data
governance’
On 22 March 2024, from 10.00-11.30 CET, the data.europa academy
[https://data.europa.eu/en/academy] hosted the webinar ‘Data
sovereignty & data governance: how can data holders stay in
control?’, marking the beginning of a series on the Data Governance
Act (DGA). [https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2022/868/oj] This first
session delved into the DGA's legal framework, aiming to enhance data
sharing in a secure and granular way, and explored the contrasts with
the Open Data Directive
[https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/dir/2019/1024/oj].

The webinar explored new institutional strategies for data sharing
among organisations, both in business-to-business and
administration-to-business contexts. With the introduction of the DGA,
the open data landscape sees significant advancements, notably in
expanding data accessibility and establishing a legal framework for
data intermediary services. These innovations empower data holders to
maintain greater control over their data while facilitating more
nuanced approaches to data sharing, ensuring sensitive information
remains secure and accessible only when deemed appropriate.

Key discussions centered on comparing the main features and
innovations introduced by the DGA with those of the Open Data
Directive, exploring anticipated benefits, and addressing potential
future challenges. Renowned speakers from the University of Norway
and the Dataspace organisation shared invaluable insights into secure
processing environments and data intermediary services, respectively,
offering perspectives on data sovereignty and control in the digital
landscape.

Participants gained valuable insights into the risks, opportunities,
and legal requirements associated with the DGA, crucial for
policymakers, platform developers, and data re-users. We express our
gratitude to our engaged audience, esteemed speakers, and
contributors. To delve deeper into the webinar's insights, watch the
