European Cybersecurity Month: Promoting cybersecurity and open data
collaboration
October marks the annual European Cybersecurity Month (ECSM)
[https://cybersecuritymonth.eu/], an EU-wide campaign dedicated to
raising awareness about digital security and cyber hygiene. Organised
by the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA)
[https://www.enisa.europa.eu/] in collaboration with the European
Commission, the campaign brings together EU Member States, businesses,
universities, NGOs, and citizens. Through various activities such as
conferences, workshops, and webinars, the ECSM aims to enhance
cybersecurity practices across Europe by sharing the latest
information and promoting best practices.

The ECSM serves as a place for knowledge exchange and collaboration
and ENISA plays a central role in this initiative by providing expert
advice, publishing new materials on critical cybersecurity topics, as
well as coordinating efforts between participating countries and
institutions. With their ‘Think Before You Click
[https://www.enisa.europa.eu/topics/cybersecurity-education/awareness-campaigns/european-cyber-security-month]’
motto, introduced in 2020, ENISA makes sures all parties are aware of
cybersecurity.

One highlighted area during ECSM is the importance of data sharing in
cybersecurity research. Sharing cybersecurity data enables the
development of new security measures, facilitates the prediction of
malicious attacks, and enhances privacy protection. A clearer
understanding of current data sharing practices can help to address
barriers, improve cybersecurity infrastructure, and promote more
collaborative efforts in the field. Open data initiatives, like
data.europa.eu [https://data.europa.eu/en], provide access to valuable
datasets that can be used to strengthen digital security measures.

As ECSM continues to promote cybersecurity awareness throughout
October, it also encourages a more open and cooperative approach to
data sharing. By doing so, it helps pave the way for better
cybersecurity practices across Europe, contributing to the development
of a more resilient and secure digital ecosystem. You can follow their
progress over the years
