Cybersecurity essentials and an open data workshop: A recap of our
October sessions
Throughout October, the data.europa academy
[https://data.europa.eu/en/academy] hosted two new sessions, a
webinar and a workshop. Together with over 800 registrants and a
handful of experts, we explored insights on the topics of safeguarding
and utilising open data in research. As October is also Cybersecurity
Awareness Month [https://cybersecurity%20awareness%20month/],
participants could increase their cybersecurity skills with our
webinar ‘Safeguarding Open Data: Cybersecurity Essentials and
Skills for Data Providers
[https://data.europa.eu/en/news-events/events/webinar-safeguarding-open-data-cybersecurity-essentials-and-skills-data]’,
hosted on 18 October.

Together with cybersecurity experts from Capgemini, participants got
to understand the cybersecurity risks related to open data, such as
information manipulation and data poisoning. Following,
representatives of ENISA [https://www.enisa.europa.eu/] discussed how
to reach a balance between open data and data protection, also thanks
to different profiles in the cybersecurity fields, such as the Chief
Information Security Officer (CISO), but also researcher, specialists
and educators. The webinar ended with a discussion on major
cybersecurity risks associated with open data, such as data tampering
and privacy violations, and provided practical strategies for
mitigating these risks. If you missed the session, you can still

The second session was an interactive workshop as part of the series
‘How to Use Open Data for Your Research
[https://data.europa.eu/en/news-events/events/workshop-how-use-open-data-your-research-0]’,
and took place on 25 October. This workshop featured experts from The
Open Data Institute [https://theodi.org/] and researchers from the
University of the Aegean [https://www.aegean.edu/], teaching
participants how open data is used in their institutions, so everyone
can learn from real-life cases. The workshop also included a hands-on
assignment to provide practical experience in locating and using open
data with datasets from data.europa.eu
[https://data.europa.eu/data/datasets?locale=en]. You can now find
