A recap of the EU Open Data Days 2025: A two-day event for innovation
and collaboration
The EU Open Data Days 2025 [https://data.europa.eu/en/euopendatadays]
brought together experts, policymakers, and data enthusiasts from
across Europe to explore the evolving role of open data in shaping
innovation, governance, and public services. Held on 19–20 March in
Luxembourg and online, the event was a representation of the European
Union’s commitment to fostering transparency, digital
transformation, and cross-border collaboration. With 29 speakers and
over 2 500 participants from various backgrounds, of which 289
attended in person, the conference showcased the growing impact of
open data in driving policy and economic growth.

The event opened with reflections from the Director-General of
the Publications Office of the European Union
[https://op.europa.eu/en/home], Hilde Hardeman, on how open data
serves as a cornerstone of democracy, innovation, and international
cooperation. Subsequent speakers reinforced the increasing importance
of data-sharing in addressing common challenges and
advancing Europe’s digital ambitions

Throughout the programme, sessions explored topics such as the use of
AI-powered digital twins to simulate governance systems and the
development of sustainable open data ecosystems. The programme

also featured practical advice on enhancing data discovery with AI, as
well as imaginative ways to make data engagement more accessible –
and enjoyable – through experimental tools.

The event further highlighted the practical applications of open data,
demonstrating its role in enhancing public services and stimulating
economic activity. Experts shared best practices in data inventorying,
interoperability, and data literacy, helping ensure that businesses,
researchers, and policymakers can harness the full value of open data.
The conference also underscored ongoing EU efforts to strengthen data
infrastructure through initiatives such as data.europa.eu
