Smart Cities: Integrating AI and open data
Smart cities
[https://commission.europa.eu/eu-regional-and-urban-development/topics/cities-and-urban-development/city-initiatives/smart-cities_en#what-are-smart-cities]
are transforming urban environments across the European Union by
integrating digital technologies to enhance traditional urban planning
services and infrastructure. These cities aim to create more
efficient, sustainable, and safer spaces by leveraging innovations
like AI and open data.

AI technologies, powered by precise open data, are improving quality
of life in urban areas
[https://projects.research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/en/horizon-magazine/smart-cities-move-how-ai-helping-improve-urban-flow].
For example, the EU-funded project AMIGOS
[https://amigos-project.eu/] uses AI-driven smart cameras and sensors
to monitor city spaces in Las Rozas, Madrid, providing real-time data
that helps city planners make informed decisions. A similar
initiative, ELABORATOR [https://www.elaborator-project.eu/], is being
implemented in the French district of Issy-les-Moulineaux, near Paris.
This system uses AI to automatically manage intersections, creating
more space for cyclists and alerting drivers to their presence based
on traffic conditions and user activity.

The success of smart cities is amplified by the combination of open
data and AI. Open data provides a large amount of data for AI systems
to function effectively, delivering accurate and actionable insights.
Examples have been shown during our data.europa academy
[https://data.europa.eu/en/academy] webinars, such as Dublin
[https://smartdublin.ie/] which demonstrated how open data helps smart
cities using digital twin technology for data-driven decision-making.
Another example is Rotterdam
[https://www.rotterdaminnovationcity.com/smart-city/], which uses
real-time data to support transparent decision-making and
collaborative urban planning, offering a practical example of how
technology can enable sustainable urban development. Both cities show
that open data is important for AI-driven smart city solutions.

The Commission's Smart Cities Marketplace

supports cities in utilising open data to drive transformative change.
