NextGenerationEU: Europe’s recovery and resilience from COVID-19
NextGenerationEU [https://next-generation-eu.europa.eu/index_en] is
the European Union’s instrument to one of the greatest challenges in
its history: the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. With a budget of
EUR 800 billion, this temporary recovery fund is designed not only to
repair the damage caused by the crisis but also to accelerate
Europe’s green and digital transitions. It provides targeted support
for member states to build a more sustainable and resilient Union.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility
[https://commission.europa.eu/business-economy-euro/economic-recovery/recovery-and-resilience-facility_en]
is the core of the recovery plan. Member states receive funding based
on their own national Recovery and Resilience Plans
[https://reform-support.ec.europa.eu/what-we-do/recovery-and-resilience-plans_en],
which include reforms and investments in important areas such as
digital innovation, healthcare, and education. For example, the
Digital Europe Programme
[https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/activities/digital-programme],
helps improve digital skills, infrastructure, and cybersecurity,
while EU4Health

supports stronger healthcare systems. Together, these initiatives
strengthen Europe’s ability to face future challenges and support
member states in building a more sustainable and resilient Union.

Transparency and accountability are essential in managing such public
investment, this is where open data plays an important role. By making
a wide range of EU and national datasets publicly accessible through
platforms such as data.europa.eu [https://data.europa.eu/], the EU
empowers citizens, journalists, researchers, and policymakers to
explore, analyse, and reuse information for greater insight. To
monitor each country’s progress in carrying out their Recovery and
Resilience Plans, the Recovery and Resilience Scoreboard
[https://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance/recovery-and-resilience-scoreboard/index.html]
provides detailed, interactive data on milestones, spending, and
implementation timelines, further strengthening visibility and trust.
