Gain access to legal knowledge: Meet the European Legal Data Space
As a part of the Common European Data Spaces
[https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/data-spaces], the
European Commission has launched the European Legal Data Space
[https://data.europa.eu/en/ELDS], an initiative designed to make legal
information across Europe more accessible, interoperable, and
reusable. Originating from the European strategy for data of February
2020
[https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:52020DC0066],
this data space focuses on unlocking the value of legal data for the
benefit of the European economy by supporting decision-making and
fostering the development of innovative legal tools.

The page, hosted in our European Data Portal is composed of 4 main
areas offering resources: common standards, access to collections of
legislation and case-law, data on justice systems and improving access
to justice, and the EUR-Lex [https://eur-lex.europa.eu/] data dump.
The common standards provide guidance for promoting interoperable
frameworks and re-use of legal information from Member States and the
EU. To access data on justice systems, users can make use of the
European e-Justice Portal [https://e-justice.europa.eu/home_en] as a
central hub for all matters related to justice.

With these resources, the data space aims at support public
administrations, legal practitioners, and civil society in navigating
open legal data. Because legal data

is often complex and fragmented, this data space is trying to
centralise it by facilitating data sharing, enabling governance, and
legal transparency.

The European Legal Data Space offers powerful resources to explore and
understand the full legal landscape of Europe. Whether you are doing
research or looking to create innovative legal tools, this data space
will prove to be a valuable resource.
