World Statistics Day: Quality data for everyone, everywhere
On Monday, 20 October, Europe joins the international community in
celebrating World Statistics Day
[https://www.fao.org/statistics/2025-World-Statistics-Day/en], an
initiative by the United Nations
[https://unstats.un.org/unsd/wsd/2025/index.html] held every five
years to highlight the importance of high-quality, trustworthy data.
This year’s theme, “Quality statistics and data for everyone”,
underscores the important role of official statistics in helping
societies navigate complex challenges and make informed decisions.

In previous years, European Statistics Day,
[https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/european-statistical-system/european-statistics-day]
was celebrated on a different date than the global event. In 2025,
both will be celebrated on the same day. The next European edition
will return in 2026, but this year offers a broader opportunity to
reflect on the collective achievements of the global statistical
community. The 2025 celebration also coincides with the 80th
anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization
[https://www.fao.org/world-food-day/80th-anniversary/en], recognising
decades of data-driven progress in sustainable development and food
security.

Open data platforms such as the European Data Portal
[https://data.europa.eu/en] play a key role in making statistics
accessible to all. From climate indicators and agricultural trends to
population and health data, these resources empower citizens,
researchers, and policymakers to explore and act on reliable
information. Open data strengthens transparency, supports inclusive
policymaking, and ensures that no one is left behind.
