Discovering the power of data visualisation: A recap of our October
webinar series
Over three insightful sessions from 14-16 October 2025, the
data.europa academy hosted the “Visualising Data for Impact”
training series, led by renowned data visualisation expert Alberto
Cairo. The series aimed to provide participants with the skills to
transform complex datasets into clear, ethical, and engaging visuals.
Each 90-minute episode blended theory, practical examples, and curated
resources, attracting a diverse audience from public, private, and
academic audiences.

The first episode, Foundations of Effective Data Visualisation,
[https://data.europa.eu/en/news-events/events/training-data-visualisation-session-1-foundations-effective-data-visualisation]
introduced the principles of information design and debunked common
myths such as “the data should speak for itself.” Participants
explored the grammar of graphics and learned how to make deliberate,
audience-centred design choices. The second session, Designing with
Integrity
[https://data.europa.eu/en/news-events/events/data-visualisation-training-session-2-designing-integrity],
tackled the ethical dimensions of visualisation, highlighting how poor
design can mislead and offering strategies to avoid distortion. The
final session, _Data Storytelling and Creating Your Narrative_
[https://data.europa.eu/en/news-events/events/data-visualisation-training-session-3-data-storytelling-and-creating-your],
focused on structuring layouts, building compelling narratives, and
using creative design to enhance message clarity.

This training series strongly aligns with the mission of open data to
make information accessible, understandable, and actionable. By
mastering visualisation techniques, data practitioners can unlock the
full potential of open datasets, enabling better decision-making,
transparency, and public engagement.
