From 2 to 7 March 2023 Eurostat [https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat]
organised the fourth session of the European Big Data Hackathon
[https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/cros/content/european-big-data-hackathon-2023_en]
in Brussels, with a focus on financial transactions. Teams from all
over Europe gathered to foster their expertise in utilizing Big Data
sources related to financial transactions and come up with innovative
ideas for products and tools that are relevant for EU policies.

The Eurostat [https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat] hosts the event to give
data scientists the chance to help answer pressing EU policy and
statistical questions. Teams compete by developing innovative
approaches, applications and usable data products combining official
statistics and big data. At the end, the winning team is selected
following an evaluation process. The hackathon provides an opportunity
to bring together best-of-class European data scientists and build
networks between statisticians and data scientists. Furthermore, it
stimulates the collaboration between the private sector and research
communities to (re)use open data.

This year’s session brought together 24 teams of National
Statistical Institutes’ experts and 4 teams of students from EMOS
network universities [https://www.emos-events.com/about]. It began on
2 March with the announcement of the challenge, and the teams had
until 6 March 2023 to work on their solutions. On 7 March 2023, the
Statistisches Bundesamt [https://www.destatis.de/DE/Home/_inhalt.html]
got awarded as winning team with their idea of a use case that is less
susceptible to coverage bias in credit card data for Germany. The
winners presented their projects at the conference on New Techniques
and Technologies for Statistics (NTTS).ts in the conference on New
