Discover the insights of our very first workshop designed for students
and academics!
On Thursday 19 October, data.europa.eu
[https://data.europa.eu/data/datasets?locale=en&minScoring=0] hosted
its very first workshop on ‘How to use open data for your
research’ with the participation of more than 200 attendees. This
successful workshop was designed for students, academics, or anyone
else interested. The goal of the workshop was to showcase the
relevance and importance of open data for academic purposes.

The data.europa.eu team initiated the workshop, introducing the
data.europa.eu portal, its purpose and its services. Following this,
the team demonstrated how one can efficiently search and filter for
specific open datasets.

During the workshop, three universities provided distinct perspectives
on using open data for academic purposes. The universities present
were KU Leuven [https://www.kuleuven.be/kuleuven], University of
Amsterdam [https://www.uva.nl/en], and University of Naples
L'Orientale. [https://www.unior.it/en/university] The KU Leuven
Research Repository [https://www.kuleuven.be/rdm/en/rdr] provided
valuable resources to students by giving access to open research data
through their database. The University of Amsterdam presented a
practical example of how linking open data can drive research
[https://lod.uba.uva.nl/Cinema-Context/-/overview]. Lastly, The UniOR
NLP Research Group
[https://sites.google.com/view/unior-nlp-research-group/home] of the
University of Naples L'Orientale showcased a real-life example of
exploiting open data for applications.

Following the presentations by the different universities, a short
practical assignment was given to all the participants. This was the
moment to put their learnings into practice. Participants engaged in
an interesting, hypothetical case in which they had to find and
utilise open datasets to arrive at answers. Participants shared their
findings and after the case a final Q&A session was held, during which
they could ask questions or share insights.

about, please find the recording of the workshop here
