Smart Cities

are revolutionising urban living by leveraging technology and data to
enhance the quality of life, sustainability, and efficiency of city
services. These cities use interconnected systems to manage resources,
reduce waste, and improve the overall urban experience. By integrating
open data into their frameworks, smart cities can foster innovation,
drive economic growth, and create more responsive and resilient urban
environments.

The European Commission hosts a Smart Cities Marketplace
[https://smart-cities-marketplace.ec.europa.eu/], that aims to engage
cities and towns to work towards a sustainable urban environment by
providing support on different levels. It includes technical
assistance, consultancy services, financing masterclasses, and
matchmaking events. It currently has already received over 100 project
proposals, developed 4 focus groups to foster a sense of community,
and participated in the latest Smart City Expo World Congress
[https://smart-cities-marketplace.ec.europa.eu/news-and-events/events/smart-cities-marketplace-smart-city-expo-world-congress].

Open data plays an important role in the development of smart cities.
It provides a large set of information that can be used by
researchers, businesses, and developers to create innovative solutions
for urban challenges. For instance, real-time transport data can help
optimise traffic flow and reduce congestion, while environmental data
can be used to monitor air quality and implement measures to combat
pollution. By making data freely available, cities can encourage
collaboration and empower citizens to participate in the
decision-making process.

To support these initiatives, the data.europa.eu portal hosts over 325
000 datasets related to smart cities
[https://data.europa.eu/data/datasets?query=smart%20city&locale=en] in
Europe. Additionally, on 6 December, a webinar will be held by the
data.europa academy [https://data.europa.eu/en/academy] to discuss the
latest trends and best practices in smart city development. More
content is to come, like a new data story, so stay tuned on the latest
urban living developments!
