A deep dive into the EU AI Act: A recap of our July webinar
As the data.europa academy [https://data.europa.eu/en/academy] begins
its summer break, we look back at our successful July webinar, ‘Next
steps to compliance: preparing for the EU AI Act
[https://data.europa.eu/en/news-events/events/webinar-next-steps-compliance-preparing-eu-ai-act]’.
The strong interest in this topic was reflected in the high
registration numbers - over 1 300 participants signed up, setting a
new record for the academy!

A Policy and Legal Officer from the EU AI Office
[https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/ai-office] (DG
CONNECT) joined the webinar to share updates on the implementation of
the EU AI Act
[https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/european-approach-artificial-intelligence].
Attendees gained insights into the timeline, including the upcoming
milestone on 2 August 2025, when rules for general-purpose AI will
apply and governance structures must be in place. The presentation
also covered key regulatory concepts, such as the Act’s risk-based
approach and the European Commission’s implementation priorities.

The second half of the webinar explored the relationship between AI
and open data, led by a Data and AI Strategy Consultant
from Capgemini Invent

The session emphasised how open data serves as a strategic foundation
for AI, enabling innovation across the AI use case journey. It also
addressed the balance between openness and protection, and how open
data can support Europe’s digital sovereignty. The webinar was
recorded, and both the recording

[https://data.europa.eu/sites/default/files/course/webinar-ai-act-slides.pdf] are
now available. While exploring the EU’s first comprehensive AI
legislative framework, the webinar highlighted both the potential of
AI and the need for responsible regulation, a topic that continues to
spark interest across sectors. As the data.europa academy heads into
its summer break, we wish you a relaxing and inspiring summer. We will
return with new webinars in September, so be sure to keep an eye on
our events calendar for updates!
