World Intellectual Property Day: Celebrating innovation and creativity
worldwide
World Intellectual Property Day, observed annually on 26 April, was
established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
[https://www.wipo.int/portal/en/index.html] to promote a better
understanding of intellectual property and its role in society. The
date marks the entry into force of the WIPO Convention in 1970. Today,
the initiative highlights why protecting inventions, brands, and
creative work remains essential for innovation, investment, and
economic development in a global and increasingly data‑driven
world.

Intellectual property systems do more than grant legal protection.
Each patent application, trademark registration, or design filing
creates structured information about technologies, markets, and
creative activity. This information helps governments track innovation
trends, supports researchers studying technological change, and
enables businesses to understand competitive landscapes. By turning
individual filings into comparable datasets, IP systems provide a
factual basis for policy discussions on innovation, growth, and
competitiveness at national and European levels.

Open data plays a key role in unlocking the value of this information.
When intellectual property data is published under open licences and
supported by clear metadata, it becomes accessible beyond legal
specialists. Analysts can explore emerging technology areas,
journalists can report on innovation trends, and policymakers can base
decisions on evidence rather than assumptions. In Europe, open access
to innovation‑related data supports transparency, cross‑border
analysis, and collaboration, while intellectual property rules ensure
that creators’ rights remain protected.

World Intellectual Property Day is an opportunity to explore how data
and intellectual property work together. Visit the World Intellectual
Property Organization website [https://www.wipo.int/en/web/ipday] to
learn more about this year’s theme and activities, and explore
datasets on the European Data Portal [https://data.europa.eu/en] to
see how open data can be used to analyse innovation across Europe.
