Celebrating democracy: Why the world day of parliamentarism matters
more than ever
Have you ever wondered how citizens’ voices are truly reflected in
political decision-making? Every year on Monday, 30 June, the
International Day of Parliamentarism
[https://www.un.org/en/observances/parliamentarism-day] shines a
spotlight on the institutions that help turn public debate into laws
and policies. Established by the United Nations
[https://www.un.org/en] in 2018, this day recognises the essential
role of parliaments in representing people and shaping democratic
societies.

The International Day of Parliamentarism marks the founding of the
Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1889, the world’s first political
multilateral organisation promoting dialogue and cooperation between
nations. At a time when trust in political institutions is under
pressure, the day serves as an opportunity to reflect on how
parliaments can remain inclusive, transparent, and accountable. It
also encourages progress in areas such as gender equality, youth
participation, and the adoption of new technologies to improve how
parliaments operate and connect with citizens.

At the same time, the way parliamentary information is shared is
evolving. From livestreamed debates to publicly accessible legislative
records, digital technologies are making it easier to follow how
decisions are made. Across Europe, many of these datasets can also be
discovered through the European Data Portal
[https://data.europa.eu/en?check_logged_in=1], where parliamentary and
government data from different countries are brought together in one
place. This makes it easier for citizens, researchers, and journalists
to explore how policies are developed, compare legislative processes,
and better understand decision-making. By opening up and connecting
these data sources, institutions create more opportunities for
participation, strengthen accountability, and bring policymakers
closer to the people they represent.

As we mark the International Day of Parliamentarism, take a moment to
explore how parliamentary work shapes your daily life, and how access
to information can help you stay informed and engaged. Discover more
