Tracking progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals with open
data
With only 4 years remaining until the target year of the United
Nations 2030 agenda [https://sdgs.un.org/2030agenda], governments and
citizens across Europe are taking stock of progress towards the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The European Commission and
Eurostat regularly monitor the EU’s performance using a broad set of
indicators that track issues such as climate action, health,
education, and equality. Reliable data helps in understanding where
progress is being made and where additional efforts are needed.

To support this work, Eurostat publishes annual assessments
[https://commission.europa.eu/publications/annual-activity-report-2025-eurostat_en]
and maintains a comprehensive set of SDG indicators.
[https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/sdi] These statistics help
policymakers evaluate trends and make evidence-based decisions. The EU
has also reinforced its commitment to sustainable development through
regular monitoring and reporting, ensuring that progress towards the
SDGs remains transparent and measurable. Readers can explore the
latest findings through Eurostat’s SDG monitoring platform and the
European Commission’s SDG monitoring page.

By making datasets freely accessible, platforms such as the European
Data Portal allow users to identify trends, compare regions, and
develop innovative solutions to sustainability challenges. Open data
also promotes accountability by allowing users to independently assess
progress towards the SDGs. Initiatives such as the regional SDG
monitoring project REGIONS2030

demonstrate how transparent data can support better local
decision-making and stronger public engagement.
