Activation reason:
BEAM (Basic European Assets Map) evaluates and compares real and potential damages caused by natural disasters, focusing both on European and national studies. BEAM displays assets in monetary values per area unit (€/m²). The complete asset information is composed of different layers, so that within a damage assessment study each type of asset can be calculated by applying individual damage function. BEAM is composed of two major components: The asset volume taken from the statistics and the land use and land cover data needed to disaggregate these values. The aim of the service request is to update the existing BEAM layer (v2) of Germany based on the most up-to-date asset layers and statistics available.Proposed solution and resultsCollection and preparation of geospatial input layer: the base for the background land use information is the CORINE land cover information combined with Urban Atlas.Collection and preparation of socio-economic data: data from the EUROSTAT data base for social-economic data needs, and additional values from the national statistical agencies as well as from other sources.Derivation of asset layer.Calculation of the normalized BEAM values.Derivation of the Damage assessment map.
