Activation reason:
Wide areas of South America, especially the Amazonas catchment, currently suffer from a large amount of forest fires. Several states in the Northwest of Brasil are particularly affected. As reported by the Brasilian space agency (INPE), there is an increase in the number of fires of 83 % in 2019, compared to the same period in the preceding year. More than 70.000 fires have been registered so far. Parts of Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina are also affected. This incident is widely described as an international crisis due to the Amazonas rainforests' importance for global climate.
