INSPIRE open data

From 1 July 2020, INSPIRE spatial polygon datasets which map more than 23 million title extents across England, Wales and Scotland will be available.

The INSPIRE Geoportal is the central European access point, next to the European Data Portal, to data provided by EU Member States and several EFTA countries under the INSPIRE Directive. The Geoportal allows monitoring of the availability of INSPIRE data sets, discovering suitable data sets based on their descriptions (metadata) and accessing the selected data sets through their view or download services. The metadata used in the Geoportal are regularly harvested from the discovery services of EU Member States and EFTA countries.

From 1 July 2020, INSPIRE spatial polygon datasets which map more than 23 million title extents across England, Wales and Scotland will be available on the Use land and property data service and Registers of Scotland’s website. The new less restricted terms are expected to broaden commercial use, creating opportunities and fuelling innovation in land and property, utility and infrastructure related industries.

The news follows the Geospatial Commission’s April announcement of the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement, including Ordnance Survey’ new freedoms for the publication of property extents. In this announcement, the Geospatial Commission stated to increase the location data available to the public sector across England and Wales. Known as the Public Sector Geospatial Agreement, it will be delivered by Ordnance Survey and will start from 1 April 2020.
