SEMIC 2025 conference recap: interoperability for impact

Key takeaways from Copenhagen on semantics, AI, and open data

The SEMIC 2025 Conference took place in Copenhagen on Tuesday 25 November, and Wednesday 26 November, bringing together experts from across Europe to explore how semantic interoperability can transform digital public services. Organised by the European Commission in collaboration with the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU, the event focused on the theme “Interoperability for Impact” and attracted over 500 participants on-site, with many more joining online.

The conference began with hands-on workshops on 25 November, focusing on semantic modelling tools and methods, the evolving role of semantics in EU data spaces, and cross-border use cases involving governance and legal interoperability. The main conference on 26 November featured keynote speeches and panels on Europe’s digital future, focusing on interoperability, sovereignty, and trust, alongside sessions on AI-driven public services, semantic technologies, GovTech innovation, and next-generation frameworks for cross-border collaboration.

Open data was a recurring theme throughout the sessions. Semantic standards and metadata practices showcased during SEMIC are essential for making datasets interoperable and reusable across borders. These efforts support the implementation of the Interoperable Europe Act and contribute to the EU’s Digital Decade objectives, ensuring that public sector data drives innovation and transparency.

This recap highlights key insights from SEMIC 2025. Curious about the full recap and session videos? Keep an eye on the Interoperable Europe website for upcoming recordings and detailed summaries of the conference.
