AI in health: Transforming care through data-driven innovation

How artificial intelligence and open data enable smarter medical solutions

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionising healthcare in Europe, offering smarter diagnostics, personalised treatments, and improved patient outcomes. The European Commission recognises healthcare as a strategic sector and is investing across the entire AI value chain to ensure Europe leads in trustworthy AI and cutting-edge medical technologies.

Key initiatives include AI Factories and Gigafactories for supercomputing resources, the review of the Chips Act to strengthen semiconductor production, and a forthcoming Cloud and AI Development Act to boost innovation. These efforts enable applications such as AI-powered wearable devices, implantable sensors, and advanced diagnostic tools. The AI Act and Medical Devices Regulations provide a clear legal framework, ensuring safety and trust for patients and professionals.

Open data is important to building trustworthy AI in health. The European Health Data Space and DIGITAL Programme are funding secure, interoperable infrastructures that connect datasets to AI development hubs. These efforts are supported by the upcoming Data Union Strategy, which aims to simplify legislation and scale up data use across borders.
