Looking back at COP 27 from a data perspective
Between 6 and 18 November 2022, the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt hosted the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 27) in Sharm El- Sheikh. At COP 27, countries came together towards achieving the world's collective climate goals as agreed upon under the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Below some of the highlights of the conference in relation to data and its role in the fight against climate change.
- The Egyptian government launched its first Vulnerability Assessment Map, which reviews and displays climate-related weaknesses using complex socio-demographic environmental and medical data. The Map is to help plan and manage human-induced climate change.
- Several speakers stressed how developing a systematic approach to data is essential to allow informed policy decisions about climate change. The President of COP 27, Sameh Shoukry in particular affirmed that ´Science plays a key role in informing the climate process, providing critical evidence and numbers to build a case for action and the imperative of implementation`.
- Systems Change Lab unveiled a new open-source data platform and discussed the latest findings from the State of Climate Action 2022 that provides an overview of how the climate crisis is dealt with.
- COP27 Global Stocktake Climate Datathon discussed the role of data in the Global Stocktake, to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
