Open data portals around Europe: Switzerland encouraging an exchange of open government data

Easy access to more than 11 000 datasets of public data

As the Swiss public administration’s central portal, opendata.swiss contributes to Switzerland’s commitment to open data by providing access to more than 11 000 datasets, supplied by 140 different organisations. The data stems from the Confederation, cantons, communes and is a record of third-party data that is relevant for the public interest.

The Swiss platform has several goals as they strive to facilitate an exchange of information on Open Government Data (OGD) between data providers and data users, create an environment promoting the use of public data, and support the infrastructure for Swiss data. Moreover, the portal contains over 100 showcases that inform users about the application of datasets in daily life or that are data visualisations with datasets found on the portal.

Opendata.swiss is part of an initiative of the Federal Statistical Office, which implemented the OGD strategy. From this strategy, the opendata.ch association was launched as part of the Open Knowledge Network and they organise activities and events in Switzerland on open data. Their goal is to live in a society that is open, innovative, and fair. The open data portal supports this vision by giving free and easy access to all kinds of information with 14 different categories.  as part of the Open Knowledge Network and they organise activities and events in Switzerland on open data.
