The benefits of Open Data from a German perspective

The economic potential for Germany

The benefits of Open Data are diverse and range from improved efficiency of public administrations, economic growth in the private sector to wider social welfare. The report 'Creating Value through Open Data', published in 2015 by the European Data Portal, provided insights in the potential benefits of Open Data in the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway.

The Konrad-Adenauer Foundation has also studied the benefits of Open Data. They studied the economic potential Open Data could bring specifically for Germany, and their study shows that open administration data in Germany can generate an economic added value of 43.1 billion Euro and create 20,000 jobs. They conclude that this provides a strong argument to accelerate the systematic provision of Open Data. And much more: Open Data can be a driver of social change and improve the relationship between the state, citizens and business considerably. An improved framework and political leadership are mentioned as important requirements in order to reap the benefits of the potential economic value of Open Data.
