Digital Future of Justice Hackathon: Pioneering the future of legal technology

Insights of this two-day event focused on harnessing technology for better human rights

The Digital Future of Justice 2.0 Hackathon, held from 15 to 17 November 2024 at the University of Bologna, brought together bright minds from across Europe to explore the synergy between technology and justice. Organised by the Council of Europe in collaboration with the Institute of Legal Informatics and Judicial Systems, this event aimed to harness technology for better human rights protection and to raise awareness among legal professionals.

26 participants, including students and researchers from all around Europe, engaged in a competition to develop innovative solutions that address key challenges in the legal field. The hackathon provided a way for these young innovators to showcase their skills and contribute to the digital transformation of justice systems. Before the competition, several preparatory online sessions took place that you can easily rewatch.

Next to a large set of participants, there were 7 mentors and 7 jury members present from different sectors, including one of our own data.europa colleagues. The winners of the competition, one of the 3 teams from Italy, presented their solution to retrieve judicial sentences with user-inputted prompts. In second place was another Italian team with their ‘CaseConnect’ solution, a facilitator for legal datasets. The other winners can be found on the Digital Justice website

The hackathon concluded with several promising projects that showcased the potential of digital tools in the legal sector. These projects not only highlighted the creativity and technical prowess of the participants but also reinforced the idea that open data and digital innovation can help build a more just society. The success of this event sets a precedent for future collaborations and innovations for digital justice.
