The global climate crisis: How open data helps combat climate change

How transparency and access to environmental data empowers smarter climate action across Europe

Climate change remains one of the most pressing global challenges of our time, with problems like frequent severe weather events, rising sea levels and loss of biodiversity threatening ecosystems and marginalised communities globally. As governments, researchers, and citizens seek effective ways to mitigate its impact, data has emerged as a powerful agent.

Open access to environmental data is transforming how we understand, respond to, and plan for climate related risks. For example, open data enables real-time monitoring of climate indicators such as temperature fluctuations, carbon emissions, and deforestation rates. From satellite imagery to air quality sensors, the availability of transparent, interoperable datasets allows stakeholders to collaborate across borders and sectors.

The European Data Portal and other EU initiatives, such as the Open Data Directive, play a pivotal role in this transformation. By centralising access to thousands of datasets from across member states, these platforms empower users to leverage this data for climate resilience. Projects, including the Copernicus Climate Change Service and the European Environment Agency’s data hubs exemplify how collaboration can drive impactful climate solutions through open data.

To truly enable the potential of open data in the fight against climate change, we must continue investing in data infrastructure and encouraging cross-sector partnerships. Feel free to explore the European Data porta, engage with available datasets and help contribute to a sustainable future one informed decision at a time.
