Climate change data and European data legislation: A recap of our November webinars

Learn more about our data.europa academy November activities

In November, the data.europa academy hosted two educational webinars, exploring the impact of interpreting and visualising climate change data and gaining further insights into the forthcoming Data Union Strategy. Together, these sessions welcomed over 1300 registrants on 7 and 28 November.

The first session, 'Driving climate action with open data: visual stories and impactful reuse cases', highlighted how open data can accelerate climate action by making information accessible and engaging. Renato Malaccorto from Open Data Charter showcased the Open Up Guide for Climate Action, which identifies 71 high-value datasets for Paris Agreement countries. Karim Douieb from Jetpack.AI demonstrated how data visualisation transforms raw climate data into compelling narratives. The webinar was recorded, and both the recording and slides are now available for viewing.

On 28 November, the webinar 'Building Europe's data future: understanding the Data Union Strategy' , explored the forthcoming Data Union Strategy (DUS) and its role in shaping Europe’s data landscape. Jirka Pilar from DG CNECT outlined how the DUS aims to enhance access to high-quality, curated data across sectors, enabling AI innovation and reducing barriers to cross-border data sharing. Tania Velcsov, Amanda Brincat, and Giorgia Spolverato presented findings from a recent study assessing the effectiveness of current legislative instruments and highlighted next steps for Europe’s data governance. If you missed the webinar, you can watch the recording and access the slides.

Both webinars underline the transformative power of open and interoperable data. The Data Union Strategy sets the stage for a stronger European data ecosystem, whilst climate-focused initiatives show how data reuse and visualisation can drive sustainability. Together, they highlight Europe’s commitment to leveraging data for innovation, competitiveness, and societal impact.
