Data for Better Lives – World Development Report 2021

Global and resilient recovery with data

On 24 March, the World Bank hosted a live panel discussion with David Malpass (World Bank Group President), Kersti Kaljulaid (President of Estonia), Brad Smith (President of Microsoft), and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala (Director General of the World Trade Organisation). In a 45-minute session, these speakers charted a course for global, resilient recovery based on data.

This discussion ties in with the World Development Report 2021: Data for Better Lives published earlier this year, which focuses on the role of data for development. The report delves into questions such as: “How do we tap the full value of data and ensure equitable access for everyone?” and  “What reforms are needed in data governance to protect individuals, businesses, and societies from harm?”

In the live discussion, panellists also addressed the question how to apply data to immediate challenges of the pandemic such as the vaccine effort? And how can we leverage data to help prioritise climate actions? Data can for instance help indicate which action is most useful for which county at a given moment in time.
