Greece relaunches its national open data portal

The redesigned data.gov.gr provides access to more than 22 000 public-sector datasets and introduces new search, geospatial and data-access features

Greece has relaunched its national open data portal, data.gov.gr, following a major redesign. The portal provides citizens, researchers, businesses and public-sector professionals with free access to public-sector data.

The redesigned platform includes an advanced search function that allows users to apply multiple criteria, including geographical location, to find relevant datasets. According to Greece’s Special Secretariat for Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance, the portal is also intended to support policymaking and the development of artificial intelligence applications by improving access to high-quality, structured data.

The portal currently provides access to more than 22 000 published datasets and 86 600 resources from over 510 public-sector bodies, made available through more than 120 data services. The number of organisations providing high-value datasets has also increased, with new contributors including the Hellenic National Meteorological Service and the Hellenic Cadastre.

The platform is built using CKAN, an open-source data management system, and uses the European DCAT-AP metadata standard. According to the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance, these features support alignment with the European framework for open data, high-value datasets and data governance.

The redesigned portal includes several new or enhanced features:

  • Geospatial search: An embedded map allows users to find geospatial data and conduct location-based searches, a capability that was not available on the previous portal.
  • APIs and bulk downloads: Data can be accessed through standardised application programming interfaces (APIs) and downloaded in formats including CSV, JSON, XML and XLSX.
  • Management of open and protected data: The platform supports the management of both openly available data and data subject to access restrictions.
  • Connection to the European Data Portal: Automated metadata harvesting connects the Greek national portal with data.europa.eu and contributes to the wider European open data ecosystem.

The relaunch forms part of the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance’s broader work on artificial intelligence and data governance, coordinated by its Special Secretariat for Artificial Intelligence and Data Governance. The initiative aims to support transparency, cooperation between public authorities and evidence-informed decision-making, while facilitating the reuse of public-sector data.
