The data.europa academy invites data enthusiasts, researchers, policymakers and conservation practitioners to join the webinar 'From space to species: using Earth Observation data for biodiversity' on Friday, 25 September from 10:00 to 11:15 CEST. As biodiversity loss and environmental change remain major global challenges, Earth Observation data is becoming an increasingly important tool for monitoring ecosystems and supporting evidence-based decision-making. This webinar will introduce the ways satellite and geospatial data can help transform environmental information into practical conservation insights.
The session will feature two leading experts in the field. Federica Marando, Biodiversity Applications Scientist at the European Space Agency, will explore the role of Earth Observation in biodiversity data and environmental monitoring. Participants will learn how satellite remote sensing can contribute to biodiversity research, ecosystem restoration, protected area management and the implementation of nature-based solutions. After this, Matthes Rieke, Managing Director at 52°North GmbH will then demonstrate how innovative technologies can help turn Earth Observation data into actionable knowledge.
During the webinar, participants will discover how organisations such as openEO enable users to analyse large volumes of Earth Observation data efficiently. These tools help organisations and communities across different regions and ecosystems generate insights that support conservation efforts and informed environmental policies. The session also highlights how open data can help bridge the gap between scientific observations and practical action.
