European Commission calls for expert group on AI and data in education and training

DG EAC and DG CNECT welcome applications before 25 May

The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sports and Culture (DG EAC) and the Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CNECT) have opened the call for applications for the expert group on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data in education and training. AI is one of the key technologies of the 21st century and has been a basis for discussion related to the economy and society, including the field of education.

AI has enormous potential in the field of education, for instance through intelligent tutoring systems, personalised learning environments, or adaptive user models. Moreover, it has the potential to reduce dropouts and increase the efficiency of teaching and learning. Through the digitalisation of education, the amount of data being collected on students also rises, leading to concerns about who collects, controls, and uses these datasets. In addition, the use of AI in education poses risks related to fundamental rights, such as the right to non-discrimination, and several data protection and privacy concerns. To address these issues, the Commission proposes that ethical guidelines on AI and data in education and training be developed.
DG EAC and DG CNECT have taken the initiative and call for applications to support their efforts and assist in the implementation of existing Union legislation, programmes and policies, and coordinate and exchange views with the Member States. Experts members can submit their application before 25 May 2021.
