EU Diversity Month: creating a diverse and inclusive workspace

Learn more about building an equal and inclusive workplace and the role of open data

May is  EU Diversity month, dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and across societies. To acknowledge the efforts of organisations in building equal and inclusive environments, the European Commission organised the second edition of the European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Award. This year, the winners span across seven Member States: Belgium, Croatia, Finland, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain.

Diversity and Inclusion encompass the representation and visibility of different groups in terms of sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, or gender identity. Highlighting this as the EU theme for May is part of the European Commission’s commitment to fight discrimination and promote diverse and inclusive workspaces. The European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity Award is for all local authorities working on diversity and inclusion. It consists of two categories, local authorities with more than 50.000 inhabitants and those with less, along with a special award for fostering LGBTIQ equality. Find out about all the award winners  here.

Open data can play a supportive role in promoting  Diversity and Inclusion, as seen with the Gender Digital Inclusion Map. This interactive map shows more than 400 worldwide initiatives that are working on bridging the gender gap in the digital field. The initiatives are classified according to requirements such as ensuring women’s access to ICTs, increasing girls’ participation in ICT studies and improving the recruitment and retention of women in ICT.

The European Commission will continue working towards fostering more inclusive and fair societies in Europe. Are you curious to know how well your organisation manages diversity? Find it out with the EU Diversity Self-Assessment Tool.
