The Netherlands creates a digital overview of all national road signs
The Netherlands is the first country in the world to create a digital overview of all national road signs. This overview is openly available since August 2020.
Starting August 2020, the Netherlands will be the first country in the world to create a digital overview of all national road signs. The data from the signs (including the indication code and exact location) are stored digitally and made available as open data. This development was commissioned by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. The data has been collected by HR Groep and will be made openly available using the Nationale Databank Wegverkeersgegevens.
By processing this data in traffic apps or navigation systems, road users can receive up-to-date information about the traffic situation on their route, including construction zones. This will aid road authorities, information service providers and road users because accurate and reliable data can contribute to increasing road safety.
When this initiative started, it concerned the data of all signs along provincial and main roads and the signs in the 130 largest Dutch municipalities. After the summer, the signs in all smaller municipalities in the country will also be included.
