Open data portals across Europe: Czechia combines education, quality, and collaboration

Explore 29 000 datasets and extensive learning resources on data.gov.cz

Czechia’s national open data portal, data.gov.cz, stands out for its comprehensive approach to making open data accessible and actionable. Hosting more than 29 000 datasets from over 300 providers across 250 topics, it offers not only a rich source of information but also the tools and knowledge needed to use it effectively.

A defining feature of the portal is its strong focus on education and capacity building. Its dedicated section on data management explains what it is, why it matters, and how the Czech government implements its strategy. To support different types of organisations, the portal provides extensive learning materials – from videos and e-learning modules to guides on open data standards, technical aspects, and practical implementation. This focus on training helps lower barriers to entry and empowers users to work confidently with public data.

Another central theme of data.gov.cz is data quality. The portal offers tools to improve datasets – even beyond the scope of open data – and provides guidance, standards, and illustrative ’bad examples’ for learning purposes. An active articles section highlights use cases, such as ’Remembrances in dates and deeds: war graves and places of worship’, alongside recommendations from the 2024 Open Data Maturity report. Participation is encouraged through easy ways to register or validate datasets and catalogues, while extensive reports on the state of Czech open data since 2017 and open technical documentation on GitHub ensure transparency and collaboration.

By combining a rich dataset catalogue with education, quality assurance, and active community involvement, data.gov.cz strengthens Czechia’s open data ecosystem. Explore the portal, learn from its resources, and contribute to shaping a more open and collaborative data landscape.
