Celebrating International Migrants Day

A journey of resilience and global solidarity

On December 18th, the world celebrates International Migrants Day, acknowledging the valuable contributions of migrants while shining a light on the countless challenges they face. This day stands as a testament to the resilience, strength, and aspirations of millions who, for various reasons, seek new lives in different countries.

A foundation of this day is the acknowledgment of migrants' significant, yet often overlooked, role in fostering prosperity, innovation, and sustainable development in both their countries of origin and the nations they call home. International migrants, along with internally displaced individuals, remain among the most vulnerable groups, encountering hardships such as limited access to essential services, exposure to exploitation, and enduring stigma and xenophobia. Beyond the challenges, this day also emphasises the positive impact of migrants, acknowledging their critical role in diverse sectors.

The significance of open data in comprehending migration patterns and challenges should not be overlooked. Open data initiatives play a decisive role in providing factual insights into migration, enabling robust research, and ensuring accessibility to crucial information. By leveraging open data, governments, researchers, and humanitarian organisations gain comprehensive perspectives on migration trends, facilitating evidence-based policies and interventions. Accessible and transparent data not only empowers decision-makers but also fosters an inclusive dialogue, amplifying understanding and empathy towards the challenges faced by migrants worldwide.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), established in 1951, continues its strong commitment to advocate for humane and orderly migration. The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) is an essential framework fostering international cooperation and improving migration governance, offering a beacon of hope for safer and more dignified migration pathways.

As the world marks International Migrants Day, let us collectively recognise the invaluable contributions of migrants while reaffirming our commitment to ensuring their safety, dignity, and rights.
