Helping drivers compare fuel prices using open data

Official daily price information powers a free tool for finding cheaper nearby fuel stations

Choosing where to fill up can make a difference to a household’s spending. Fuel prices vary between stations, but comparing them does not have to mean driving from one forecourt to another. Reclamar.es, a Spanish consumer information directory, reuses official open data to help drivers check nearby prices before setting off.

Its free Gasolinera Barata tool allows users to search by postcode or town and compare nearby stations for different fuel types, without registering. The service draws on daily price information from Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, covering more than 11,400 stations. According to the submitted use case, Reclamar.es also combines these records with municipal statistics from Spain’s national statistics institute and publishes price pages for provinces and municipalities.

Open data makes this service possible by allowing public information to be reused beyond the website where it was originally published. The official fuel-price dataset, catalogued on Spain’s national open data portal, provides the foundation for the comparison tool. Presenting these records through a simple location search helps drivers find information relevant to their journey, turning a national dataset into a practical resource for everyday decisions.
