Highlighting AI for Public Good: From a vision to global action

How artificial intelligence is driving positive social impact through the AI for Public Good initiative

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more influential, shaping how it can be used as a tool in serving the public good. To highlight the benefits that AI can provide for the public, ‘AI for Public Good’ was established by the European AI Office, which focuses on leveraging AI in an ethical and responsible way to create positive social impact.

The European Commission pursues AI for Public Good by creating AI models and algorithms to work on major societal challenges. These open access models aim to stimulate collaboration and innovation. To structure the initiative, focus areas have been identified like energy optimisation, health, environment, and reconstruction to face industry-specific challenges. At the forefront of these innovations is open data, from which AI derives its findings. Many of the innovations in these sectors would not have been possible without open data being publicly available in open data portals. In the data.europa.eu portal, for example, you can find close to 2 million open datasets.

A landmark moment for AI for Good was the AI for Good Global Summit 2017. Since then, the yearly AI for Good Global Summit continues to be their flagship event, taking place from 8-11 July this year. This summit looks at how AI can be guided by open data to accelerate progress towards various initiatives, including the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The initiatives around AI for Public Good remind us that using technology in an ethical and sustainable way allows for resourceful contributions. The AI for Good Global Summit taking place is a call to action to collaborate on shaping the future of AI and highlight the positive impact it can have on societal developments.
